Summary
All that we love is on the line and our elected officials are not answering the call. We cannot wait for a candidate or political campaign to save us, we must organize for a better world right now. We Are Somebody is stepping up to fill the void. Democracy will not be strengthened by stating we aim to strengthen our democracy, it will be strengthened by activating Americans who have been left behind by our current political system. We Are Somebody is not a single-issue group, We build the bridge between all parts of the pro-working class, progressive movement to oppose fascism and create a stronger democracy.
Our Mission
We Are Somebody is a coalition-building movement for the working class. We work with groups across various issues and bring us all together under one guiding principle: The Freedom Budget for All Americans.
The Problem
People want to stand up and fight back against fascism and they do not want to wait on any political party to do so. Working class Americans desire an organization that not only protests against the Trump administration, but also provides a clear vision for the future – a vision where no one goes bankrupt if they get injured or sick, one where you do not go into debt if you pursue a higher education, one where we choose humanity and life over bombs and destruction. Progressives have often taken the inside path as our main path to effect change. The way in which corporate money is spent in Democratic primaries proves we need a new outside strategy that engages progressives to take direct action and organize year-round in communities where the progressive left has struggled to gain traction. It is our belief that we have been here before. America once enslaved Black Americans, then subjected Black people to systemic horrors like redlining and Jim and Jane Crow.
The Solution
Originally introduced in the late 1960s by union organizer A. Philip Randolph, Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and activist Bayard Rustin, The Freedom Budget for All Americans aimed to eliminate poverty within 10 years. This piece of civil rights history has been purposely forgotten because the ruling class knows the power it holds. We Are Somebody is bringing it back to the forefront. This is why we believe the path forward is the same path Randolph, King, and Rustin laid out.
THE FREEDOM BUDGET FOR ALL AMERICANS IS A NINE-POINT PLAN:
- To provide full employment for all who are willing and able to work, including those who need education or training to make them willing and able.
- To assure decent and adequate wages to all who work.
- To assure a decent living standard to those who cannot or should not work.
- To eradicate substandard housing and provide decent, affordable homes for all Americans.
- To provide decent medical care and adequate educational opportunities to all Americans, at a cost they can afford.
- To purify our air and water and develop our transportation and natural resources on a scale suitable to our growing needs.
- To unite sustained full employment by creating a human rights economy with sustained full production and equitable economic outcomes.
- To rid our political system of dark money and corporate money.
- To prioritize domestic spending over military spending.
We Are Somebody is organizing with groups that advocate for each pillar. Once in coalition, we start organizing across movements to create a broad, pro-peace, pro-working class movement that is unstoppable.
Why It Matters
For too long, working people have been told to wait – to wait for the right candidate, the right moment, or the right system to fix itself. But change has never come from waiting. It comes from organizing.
The Freedom Budget is a movement for liberation, built by and for the people. We are reclaiming the unfinished work of the civil rights movement and building a democracy that works for everyone.
